چکیده

The pattern of pathologies affecting the hips of local Chinese patients is very different from that in western countries. Although there is no data on the actual incidence of hip disease in Hong Kong, one local study involving 647 cases of total hip replacement showed that AVNFH was the commonest cause, contributing to 45.6% of all cases of hip Abstract: Avascular necrosis of femoral head (AVNFH) is the commonest cause of hip joint destruction leading to hip replacement in Hong Kong. Steroid and alcohol are the two commonest causes of AVNFH. Management of this painful and progressive situation in its' early stages remains a controversial subject but when the painful hip is affecting the patient's quality of life, a hip replacement is the treatment of choice for pain relief. However, there are concerns about the longevity of the hip replacement in this group of relatively young and active patients. Recent advances in the artificial hip joint such as the use of metal or ceramic may prolong the survivorship of the prosthesis even in the very young and very active patients.

Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head: Are Any Genes Involved?

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) is a pathologic process that results from interruption of blood supply to the femur bone resulting in the death of bone cells and collapse of the femoral head. Nontraumatic ANFH continuesto be a significant challenge to orthopedic surgeons. While the exact mechanisms remain elusive, many new insights have emerged from research in the last decade tha...

Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis in Heterozygous Sickle Haemoglobin, the Role of Parenteral Drug Abuse: A Case Report

Sickle cell trait is a benign haemoglobin disorder which rarely results in disease or complications. A few cases of osteonecrosis have been reported in the literature in parts of the world with advanced health care system. There are various predispositions to developing avascular necrosis in general, while the sickle beta globin gene inheritance is the most efficient factor. Injection drug abus...

Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head in Patients with Hemoglobinopathies: a Case Series and Review of the Literature

Osteonecrosis or avascular necrosis (AVN) is a pathologic process that results from a critical decrease of blood supply to the bone and elevated intraosseous pressure [1]. While the pathogenic process is not clear, it is believed that osteonecrosis is the final common pathway of traumatic and non-traumatic insults and that it impairs blood circulation to the femoral head. Subsequently, interrup...

Comparison of Total Hip Arthroplasty and Core Decompression in Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head after Taking Temgesic and Norgesic

Background: Osteonecrosis is common after taking Temgesic and Norgesic. This study intended to suggest the preferable surgical treatment in osteonecrosis patients who use these drugs. Methods: Twenty tree patients with hip osteonecrosis who were hospitalized in the Kerman hospitals after using Temgesic and Norgesic were followed for about 14 months from 2008 to 2010 (from a minimum of 2 months ...

Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis Is Not Caused by Arthroscopic Posterolateral Femoroplasty.

This study was conducted to identify the risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head after arthroscopic femoroplasty extending to the posterolateral femoral neck, the source of the primary blood supply to the femoral head. Cam lesions of femoroacetabular impingement are typically anterior along the junction of the femoral head and neck. However, anatomic variations can involve the posterolat...

Osteonecrosis of femoral head in SLE patient after short period of corticosteroid therapy--a case report.

Numerous cases of osteonecrosis associated with steroid therapy have been reported and most of these had received large doses for prolonged periods. Avascular necrosis of bone occurring after short term steroid treatment is, however, rare. Many underlying causes have been suggested as being associated with this condition. Gregg et al believe that cases may have avascular necrosis of bone with c...
